What to Expect

A discovery flight is a real introduction to aviation, guided by a Certified Flight Instructor from start to finish — not a sightseeing ride. It's the exact first lesson our students fly, which is why it's also the best way to find out if flight training is for you.

Step 1

Meet Your Instructor

You'll be paired with a Certified Flight Instructor who guides the entire experience — no experience needed, and every question is welcome.

Step 2

Preflight Walkaround

Explore the aircraft up close the way real pilots do: checking the wings, control surfaces, and engine before every flight.

Step 3

You Take the Controls

Once you're safely in the air, your instructor hands you the controls. Fly over the Miami coastline — beaches, skyline, and turquoise water below.

Step 4

Debrief & Next Steps

Back on the ramp, your instructor walks you through what you flew and what a path to your Private Pilot License would look like — only if you want it.

Common Questions

What is a discovery flight?

A discovery flight is a real introductory flying lesson — not a sightseeing ride. You'll meet a Certified Flight Instructor, do a hands-on preflight walkaround of the aircraft, and then actually fly the plane yourself during an approximately one-hour experience over Miami, with your instructor beside you the whole time.

Do I really get to fly the plane?

Yes. Once you're safely in the air, your instructor hands you the controls and coaches you through real flying — turns, climbs, and holding a heading over the Miami coastline. The instructor handles takeoff and landing and can take over at any moment.

How much does a discovery flight cost in Miami?

GoFly Academy discovery flights start at $199 in the Cessna 172. Bring a guest along for $249, or upgrade to the glass-cockpit Cirrus SR-20 for $299. Book and pay online, and you can be in the air this week.

Does the flight count toward a pilot license?

It can. Your discovery flight is flown with a Certified Flight Instructor, so the time can be entered in a pilot logbook as dual instruction — meaning your very first flight already counts toward your Private Pilot License if you decide to keep training.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes — choose the Discovery Flight + 1 Guest package and a friend or family member rides in the back seat while you fly. They'll get the same views; you get the controls.

Do I need any experience or preparation?

None at all. Wear comfortable clothes and sunglasses, bring a government-issued ID, and arrive a few minutes early. Your instructor covers everything else — including the camera-worthy moments.
