What Happens During a Discovery Flight?

For many aspiring pilots, scheduling a discovery flight is the moment aviation becomes real. It is one thing to watch airplanes from the ground or spend hours researching flight training, but sitting in the left seat of an airplane with a flight instructor beside you is an entirely different experience.

One of the biggest misconceptions about discovery flights is that they are simply scenic airplane rides. While you'll certainly enjoy incredible views, a discovery flight is designed to give you a genuine introduction to what flight training is actually like. From the moment you arrive at the airport, your instructor will begin introducing you to the procedures and responsibilities that every pilot learns throughout their training.

Before the Airplane Ever Moves

Every flight begins long before the engine starts.

Your instructor will introduce you to the aircraft and explain the purpose of the preflight inspection. Together, you'll walk around the airplane, checking items such as the flight controls, fuel quantity and quality, oil level, tires, lights, and other components to verify that the aircraft is safe to fly. This is a routine that pilots perform before every flight, whether they're a student pilot on their first lesson or an airline captain with thousands of hours.

Once inside the cockpit, you'll become familiar with the flight controls and primary flight instruments while your instructor explains what each one does. Before engine start, you'll also learn why pilots use checklists and how they help ensure every flight begins safely and consistently.

Learning the Flow of a Flight

After starting the engine, your instructor will guide you through taxiing to the runway while explaining how pilots steer an airplane on the ground and communicate with air traffic control. Since GoFly Academy operates from Opa-locka Executive Airport (KOPF), a busy Class D airport, you'll hear real-world radio communications with both Ground Control and the Control Tower, along with other aircraft operating in the area. Listening to these communications is often one of the most exciting parts of a discovery flight, as it gives you a firsthand look at how pilots and controllers work together to safely manage airport operations.

Before takeoff, you'll complete the same run-up and final checks performed before every flight. Your instructor will explain what is being checked, why each step is important, and how these procedures become second nature as pilots gain experience.

Once everything is ready, you'll line up on the runway, advance the throttle, and experience one of aviation's most unforgettable moments as the airplane accelerates and lifts off the ground.

Taking the Controls

After departure, you'll head east toward the Miami coastline before following the shoreline past Miami Beach and around Key Biscayne. Seeing South Florida from the air is an experience unlike any other, and it provides the perfect setting to begin learning the fundamentals of flying.

With your instructor by your side, you'll have the opportunity to take the controls and experience how the airplane responds to your inputs. You'll learn how pilots make gentle turns, maintain altitude, and keep the aircraft flying smoothly while also being introduced to the primary flight instruments and how they are used to monitor the aircraft throughout the flight. Your instructor will explain how pilots combine what they see outside with what they see on the instrument panel to maintain safe and accurate flight.

Throughout the entire experience, your instructor will be there helping you every step of the way while giving you the freedom to begin exploring your passion for aviation. Whether it's your first time touching the controls or your first time speaking over the radio, they'll guide you through each phase of the flight at a pace that's comfortable and enjoyable.

Is a Discovery Flight Worth It?

For most people considering flight training, a discovery flight answers questions that no video or article can.

It gives you the opportunity to experience the airport environment, meet a flight instructor, sit in the pilot's seat, and participate in every phase of a real flight. You'll see how pilots prepare before departure, communicate with air traffic control, monitor the aircraft in flight, and safely return to the airport, all while gaining a better understanding of what future flight lessons will look like.

Many students leave their discovery flight realizing that learning to fly is far more approachable than they expected. The procedures, radio communications, and cockpit environment may seem intimidating from the outside, but having an instructor explain each step makes the entire experience both educational and exciting.

Ready to Take the First Step?

If you've ever wondered what it's like to fly an airplane, there's no better way to find out than experiencing it for yourself.

A discovery flight is more than just an introduction to flying. It's an opportunity to see if aviation is right for you, ask questions, take the controls, and experience the excitement that has inspired generations of pilots.
